Decision Prompt

How do you handle the renewal objection without overpromising roadmap certainty?

Situation Brief

A renewal stakeholder says they will not recommend renewal unless a requested reporting capability is committed for the next quarter. Product has discovery underway but no committed release date. Sales wants to imply the feature is coming soon.

Available Evidence

  • The feature request is tied to an executive initiative and not just user preference.
  • Product has three discovery calls scheduled but no roadmap commitment.
  • The customer has realized value in two existing workflows.
  • The renewal is 38 days away and Procurement asked for final justification.
  • Sales says the customer 'just needs confidence' and wants softer language.
  • The CSM knows a previous roadmap hint created distrust when timing slipped.
  • A workaround exists but covers only 60 percent of the requested reporting need.

Answer Rubric

What strong judgment sounds like.

Strong answer

Separate renewal value, roadmap discovery, and workaround confidence.

  1. Acknowledge the business importance of the capability without making a release promise.
  2. Anchor renewal justification in value already delivered and current operational risk.
  3. Offer a Product discovery checkpoint with approved language and decision date.
  4. Present the workaround honestly, including what it does not solve.
  5. Align Sales, CS, and Product on the exact commitment boundary before replying.

Weak answer patterns

  • Hinting the feature is coming soon to preserve the renewal.
  • Treating roadmap uncertainty as a Product problem separate from renewal trust.
  • Over-selling the workaround as equivalent to the requested capability.
  • Ignoring existing value because the customer framed the renewal around one gap.

Manager Coaching Notes

  • Ask whether the reply would still be defensible if the feature slips.
  • Check that the team names what is committed, what is under discovery, and what is not promised.
  • Require commercial and Product alignment before any customer-facing roadmap language.
