Decision Prompt

How do you respond to pricing interest while protecting discovery quality, packaging accuracy, and trust?

Situation Brief

A director from a new business unit asks, 'Can you give me a rough price range before I invite Procurement?' The existing champion is excited, Sales wants to quote quickly, Deal Desk requires packaging confirmation, and the CSM has not confirmed workflow fit or whether the current rollout's product gap will affect this team too.

Available Evidence

  • The new buyer has budget this quarter but has not described success criteria.
  • Current users have value proof in one workflow, not the workflow the new team mentioned.
  • Sales says a fast quote will keep momentum.
  • The champion wants to look helpful internally and is pushing for an intro.
  • The product gap from the original team may be more severe for the new team.
  • No one knows whether the director can buy or only influence.
  • The renewal is not at risk, but a bad expansion motion could damage trust.
  • Deal Desk says the likely package depends on seat count, data volume, and support tier.
  • The AE suggests giving a wide verbal range with a discount caveat to avoid slowing the deal.

Answer Rubric

What strong judgment sounds like.

Strong answer

Hold commercial momentum without skipping fit validation.

  1. Acknowledge the pricing question and explain why package, scale, and workflow fit determine whether a range would be useful.
  2. Ask two workflow-fit questions and one success-criteria question before involving Sales deeply.
  3. Flag the known product gap and Deal Desk dependency as validation items, not hidden objections.
  4. Offer a tight next step: 20-minute fit check, package recommendation, then AE-approved pricing path.
  5. Align Sales on whether a range is allowed, who can give it, and what caveats are mandatory.
  6. Avoid discount language until authority, package, and value are clear.

Weak answer patterns

  • Sending pricing to preserve momentum before confirming fit.
  • Turning the buyer away because the account is not ready for expansion.
  • Letting the champion sell internally without product-fit guardrails.
  • Hiding known product risk until after the buyer is commercially engaged.
  • Giving a wide range that later feels like a promise or discount anchor.

Manager Coaching Notes

  • Ask whether the response keeps the buyer engaged while protecting quality.
  • Score the next step on speed, fit validation, and commercial discipline.
  • Coach the CSM to make Sales alignment explicit, not implied.

AI Practice Prompt

Practice with your AI tool of choice.

Draft a response to an expansion buyer asking for pricing before discovery. Acknowledge the ask, explain packaging dependencies, protect momentum, name known product-fit risk, define the AE/Deal Desk boundary, and propose a fast fit check before any range or discount language.
